Bryony secures a place in the National Youth Training Choir

Monday 16th January 2012

A year 11 pupil at the Duke of York's Royal Military School has secured a coveted place with the National Youth Training Choir (NYTC).

Bryony Armstrong applied to the choir in September and was called for an audition in Dulwich, London in November 2011. Her letter of acceptance to the Soprano section of the NYTC came through the post this month. The audition required Bryony to do some sight singing (while looking at music sheets) and vocal/listening exercises to test her singing range.

Bryony used to play the piano and violin before discovering a real flair and passion for singing. She embarked on singing lessons at the school in year 7, and has never looked back. The 15 year old is a member of the school choir and is currently working towards her Grade 8 singing exams.

The National Youth Choirs consist of four junior choirs for nine to 13 year olds, two National Youth Training Choirs for 13 to 18 year olds, the National Youth Choir (NYC) for 16 to 22 year olds and world-renowned chamber choir, Laudibus. Many, who are accepted for the NYTC, move into the NYC when they get older.

Bryony is delighted to be accepted and said "singing with others who love singing too is such an amazing opportunity for me. I was very nervous at the audition, and now I'm really excited to be part of the choir. There is an opportunity for some of us to be selected to sing at the Royal Albert Hall in April 2012 as a 700 strong choir for the Olympics celebrations, and I hope I'm one of the ones they pick!"

The Duke of York's Royal Military School is a 100% co-educational boarding school which has music as an underlying theme. Its choir recently received national press coverage for the children's recorded version of the Military Wives song 'Wherever you are' and over 15,000 Youtube hits (search jrobinsoncomposer).
