Matthew receives offer from Jesus College, Cambridge

Monday 30th January 2012

A year 13 pupil at the Duke of York's Royal Military School has been granted a conditional offer to study mathematics at Jesus College, Cambridge University.

Matthew Garner attended two interviews at the University in December. One interview, with a tutor, tested his mathematical ability, asking questions around the subject. In the second interview, the 17 year old's problem solving abilities were tested - he was set a question and given just half an hour to think of his answer.

Matthew, whose father is a Lt Colonel in the Royal Engineers, and whose mother is a Facilities Co-ordinator for Newcastle University Business School, received the good news from his Housemaster in the dining hall at dinner. He said: "When everyone knew that I had received the offer they all clapped and cheered – it was a very loud celebration for me!"

The Headmaster at The Duke of York's, Charles Johnson said: "We are truly delighted that Matthew has received his offer from Cambridge. He has worked extremely hard to gain this place, and the fact that we are a non-selective school shows that anything is indeed possible for all our students".

The upper sixth form student will be required to take a Sixth Term Examination Paper at Cambridge at the end of June. Matthew has enjoyed his time at the Duke of York's Royal Military School, especially the Combined Cadet Force where Matthew is an Army Instructor (equivalent to the rank of Junior Under Officer) and in his role as Ceremonial Guard Commander, teaching year seven students drill.

Mr Garner, Matthew's father said: ""Matthew has always loved maths and it was clear from a very young age that he had a talent for it, with success in competitions at school and in the National Maths Challenge. He has a very strong work ethic and is never satisfied unless he feels that he has done everything he can to get the best marks possible. We have always been extremely proud of him and are obviously particularly pleased that his efforts have been recognised by Jesus College through this offer of a place at Cambridge."

Jesus College is a medium size College, admitting some 140 undergraduates and 100 postgraduates a year. Its aim is to select those applicants who have the greatest academic promise and commitment. They welcome undergraduate applicants from all types of school, and all are considered for admission on their own merits.
