Visit from newly appointed School Commissioner

Wednesday 1st February 2012

School Commissioner, Dr Elizabeth Sidwell, visited the staff and pupils at The Duke of York’s Royal Military School (DOYRMS) in January.

The School invited Dr Sidwell, who has 20 years’ experience of running schools and was appointed by Educational Secretary Michael Gove, to demonstrate its success of becoming an Academy in 2010 and share news about the changes that are planned. This included initial plans for the recent £25million grant received from The Department of Education.

DOYRMS’s proactive partnership with Astor College was also discussed along with the positive influence that the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) has in the school – instilling leadership, teamwork and self-reliance in our pupils.

Dr Sidwell works with the Department for Education to put in place arrangements between underperforming schools that would benefit most from an Academy solution, and established sponsors with a good track record of raising standards. Dr Sidwell visits schools across the country to identify good practice.

Headmaster of DOYRMS, Charles Johnson, said: “We are delighted that Dr Sidwell has taken the time out of her busy schedule to visit the School.  Our pupils were able to share their thoughts about the CCF, and how they have enjoyed the outdoor adventures that it offers them.  Our partnership with Astor College goes from strength to strength, and Dr Sidwell acknowledged how forging such links can be of great mutual benefit”.

School Governor and Chief Executive of Astor College, Chris Russell, and Executive Head of Durand Academy, Greg Martin, also met Dr Sidwell and her colleague Darren Leafe.
