Three little maids from school are we ...

Thursday 13th May 2010

Primary school pupils in Lancashire dressed up Japanese-style at a masterclass on Japan held recently at Lancaster Royal Grammar School. This was just one of a whole array of Japanese-themed activities that they enjoyed, including drinking green tea, making Ningyo dolls, learning Japanese words and numbers, making peace cranes to send to Hiroshima and trying out the Chopsticks Challenge.

The pupils were visiting LRGS as part of InspirUs, an innovative programme run by LRGS for able boys and girls in Years 3 and 4 in local primary schools. It aims to raise aspirations and to encourage able pupils, including those who may not have fully appreciated their academic potential, to explore avenues well beyond the confines of the National Curriculum. InspirUS intends to stimulate interest and curiosity, in such a way as to inspire the children to recognise how they might achieve the most.

The InspirUs programme is being offered to all 53 primary schools in the city of Lancaster and so far over 200 pupils have taken part in sessions, on themes as diverse as Planet Saline, May the Force be With You, The Aliens are Coming! and Water, Water Everywhere. The children have responded very positively to the masterclasses, calling them 'mind-blowing and interesting' and 'totally awesome'. One pupil said: 'It's really fun – I learn things I don't get taught at school'.
