18 year old Siobhan Randall from Bedfordshire and a boarder at St George's School Harpenden is the school's second sixth former to win a coveted Prime Minister's Global Fellowship Award to study in Brazil.
Having written an essay and attended a series of selection activities and interviews Siobhan will now spend 6 weeks this summer, (from mid July) in Brazil exploring in an intense study programme the social, economic and environmental issues posed by rapid global change.
After two weeks in Rio for a language and cultural immersion course Siobhan then heads to Sao Paolo where she will work with a multinational business to understand the role of British companies in the global marketplace.
All flights, transport and accommodation are paid for and whilst in Sao Paolo she will live with a Brazilian host family.
On her return Siobhan will contribute to the Fellows De-Brief Conference in September at which she expects senior Cabinet members to also attend.
Speaking of her award Siobhan thanked her teachers and the Boarding staff for their support and her reference. "It is a great honour to get this award and a wonderful chance to develop my interest in global issues which I study at school and through my work for various charities. I am really excited, but have to concentrate on my A levels first as the papers start in a week or so."
Headmaster Norman Hoare spoke of the school's delight at Siobhan's success.
"To have one student achieve this prestigious award was quite something three years ago (Daniel Nunn from Flamstead, now at Bristol reading Biology) but to now have Siobhan destined for the same country on the same Fellowship is a real feather in our cap and a great testimony to Siobhan. She is the kind of student many of us aspire to be – interested in contemporary affairs, clever and determined to make a difference in the future. She has a university place to study Politics and with this kind of International experience she will revel in her degree course. Meanwhile we are keeping her feet on the ground in the Boarding House where her studies are strictly supervised as she prepares for her A levels in a week or so's time."
