Cricket legend visits Lancaster school
Thursday 17th June 2010
Lancaster Royal Grammar School was delighted to welcome cricketing legend Sir Garfield Sobers at the school last week. Former West Indies captain Sir Garfield, who is considered one of the greatest ever all-round cricketers and famed for his six sixes in one over in 1968, visited pupils and parents at Lancaster Royal Grammar School.
The 1st XI cricket team at LRGS has been selected to play in the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Tournament in Barbados in 2011. This is the fifth time the school has taken part in this invitation-only tournament and they will face stiff competition from school teams from around the world. After watching the 1st XI playing, Sir Garfield talked to assembled staff, pupils and parents about the forthcoming tournament.
Head of cricket at LRGS, Ian Ledward said afterwards: "It was a tremendous privilege to meet Sir Garfield and the boys were very inspired by his visit. We are really looking forward to the tournament next year. It's an extremely demanding competition where every match seems like a cup final, played in temperatures exceeding 90°F!"
The school last took part in the tournament in 2008 and came ninth out of 20 teams, winning five out of nine matches. They narrowly lost the final match against Friends of the Nation School, Guyana by one wicket. If they had won this game, LRGS would have finished fourth overall.
